ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research was to develop a resilience-enhancing strategy for SMMEs in disaster-prone areas, particularly in developing countries where resilience-enhancing strategies are limited. The research was done quantitatively, and an online survey was utilised to collect data from all registered SMMEs in uMhlathuze Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The survey was conducted using a structured, self-designed questionnaire distributed online via a Google Forms link. Data collected was analysed quantitatively using a computer and Stata 19 Data Analysis Software. Regression analysis was employed to analyse the data. Capitalising on connections created through regression modelling, the resilience-enhancing strategy suggested shows that disaster preparation and response are key to SMME resilience. To prepare and cope well with disasters, SMMEs need to identify underlying challenges that undermine their ability to do so. Thereafter, preparedness and response strategies should be modified to align with underlying challenging factors to lessen their impact. Based on the suggested strategy, the researchers recommend that SMMEs should strive to identify challenges that hinder preparedness and response capabilities and adapt preparedness and response strategies accordingly. In addition, the government should simplify aid application procedures so that more SMMEs can access government aid.
